* This is of definite interest – check this out!

Satire: expression in which human or individual vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derisionirony, parody, caricature, or other methods, sometimes with an intent to inspire social reform.

  1. Read the following three satirical articles by the onion:

  2. For each, on your blog:
    1. Write the name of the article and provide the link back to it.
    2. Explain what person, idea, or social norm is being satirized.
    3. What satirical techniques are being used? (sarcasm, irony, exaggeration, fake quotes, purposeful ambiguity)? Use at least two direct quotes for each article in explaining what technique is being used.

We will begin working on a rough draft of a satire article tomorrow – check out the guidelines below:

Satire Guidelines

Word Count: 200 – 400

Deadline: Wednesday, April 19

Include:

  • Humor! (sarcasm, irony, exaggeration)
  • Quotes (absolutely they can be made up)
  • News structure (lede, inverted pyramid structure, who, what, when, why, and how)
  • A purpose – which should NOT be explicitly stated – it’s not an editorial! (you think homework is ridiculous and so you are mocking it)
